Cafe Mochiko

Today was a nice cold crisp day. It wasn’t too cold, where the air freezes your nose as you take your first breathe walking outside, but relaxing, signifying the transition to winter. Most importantly, Alaina and I decided to try out Cafe Mochiko. It’s located on the East side of town and they serve bakery items in the morning and dinner items in the evening. Due to the time and the errands we had to run, we decided we would go to Cafe Mochiko and try some bakery items.

Cafe Mochiko is located on Madison street in the DeSales Plaza and if you go behind the building there is a parking garage that is free for guests visiting the Plaza. As we walked into Cafe Mochiko we were met with about ten tables, some of which were filled with friends and families partaking of the different pastries Mochiko has to offer and drinking their iced coffee jelly.

Alaina and I went to the food display case and checked out the various pastries. I knew from my online stalking that I wanted to try the Ube Halaya Croissant that’s filled with a purple yam jam and sweet yam cream. Alaina decided to go with the Sobacha Chocolate Chunk Cookie. We decided to take the goods to go because Mochiko only has drip coffee and Alaina wanted flavored coffee when she ate her cookie. They quickly packaged our goods in a nice box and off we went.

It was a relief to go home and enjoy our snacks as we had been out all morning and we just wanted to sit in our fat pants and enjoy some down time as we chowed down. As soon as we got home, I made a pot of coffee and cleaned up the kitchen. Once the coffee was done brewing, I got out two plates and started dividing each snack into two.

Ube Halaya Croissant

The Ube croissant had the most beautiful purple cream that is very eye catching. The croissant was easy to cut and was nice and flaky and had a good taste of its own. The cream was nice and light, there really wasn’t a flavor to it, but when eaten with the croissant it had a good balance of sweet and a little salty. As I got towards the middle of the croissant, I came across a darker purple filling. It was firmer than the cream, so I think it was the purple yam jam, but it had a strong coconut flavor as well texture of coconut, which made the whole dessert. Alaina really liked the croissant too. She thought it was perfect as is, but I think I would have enjoyed it more, if there would have been a continuous layer of the coconut flavored jam instead of having it globbed only in the middle.

Sobacha Chocolate Chunk Cookie

Alaina and I split the cookie in half. This one was a little different, it had chunks of chocolate and chunks of hazelnut with a kiss of salt on the top. I could definitely taste the chocolate and the hazelnut gave it a nice texture with the crunch. The salt enhanced the flavor of the chocolate and the overall cookie.

Overall, we enjoyed both desserts, but the one that stood out the most was the Ube croissant. The color of the cream, the tasty coconut flavored jam, with the yummy buttery croissant was the clear winner. We would recommend that if you decide to check out Cafe Mochiko, definitely pick up the Ube croissant.
