Apparently a new donut shop opened up in my area. Our masseuse, who is a connosiuer of baked goods told my sister that she had tried a new donut shop. The new shop is called Parlor Donuts and not only does it offer donuts, but it has breakfast sandwiches and also offers a variety of different coffees. Talk about a winner!
Within days of being informed about this new donut shop my sister and I had to go and check it out. Before we went, we checked out it’s website and a pamphlet that our friend gave us. I was really impressed with all of the options. You don’t know how many times I have been to a donut shop and wanted a coffee but they only had drip or had no coffee at all. What was also impressive is that our friend said that if they run out of donuts in the middle of the day they will make you a fresh one. I was blown away when I heard that. There have been times when I wanted a donut in the middle of the day but the donut shop was either closed or were sold out.
Alaina and I checked out the donuts, but we couldn’t really decide which ones we would get. So, we went there in person to see if that would help us decide. The store is really cute and extremely clean. When you walked in you are welcomed with the overwhelming food case overflowing with massive donuts. The staff was extremely friendly and gave us some time to review the selection. There were churro, blueberry cheesecake, chocolate, lemon, and so many more. Alaina ended up getting the coconut cream donut and I chose the lemon bar donut.
We started with the coconut cream donut. On top the donut had a dollop of whipped cream and the outside was covered in a thin sugary coating that provided a little texture. Alaina cut the donut in half and we were pleasantly surprised with coconut cream middle. The coconut cream was light with a mixture of coconut flakes that provided a nice change in texture. The donut itself resembled the inside of a croissant. It had different layers within the donut that provided a nice chew. This is what makes Parlor Donuts different from other donut places. Their donuts are not cake like, but are layered. When you take a bite all the flavors come together the sugary outside, with the soft croissant like dough, and the coconut cream were a phenomenal combination.
The second donut we tried was the lemon bar. On the outside it too had the sugar coating on the outside, but it also had a lemon glaze drizzled all over the donut, topped off with a dollop of whipped cream. We cut into the lemon donut and were met with the beautiful layers of dough. Unfortunately, this one did not have a custard or curd on the inside. The combo of the sugar, the lemon drizzle, and the soft dough was really good, but we found that the lemon flavor was a little muted. When I think of lemon, I think of a sharp, sucker punch of lemon, and I think this could have really enhanced the flavor of the donut.
Overall, we really enjoyed the donuts we tried at Parlor Donuts, but our overall favorite was the Coconut cream. If you have never tried a layered donut, I would definitely recommend that you try Parlor Donuts. You won’t be disappointed.
