This summer has been extremely hot. July we had a huge heat wave come through Cincinnati, and it was short of being completely miserable. So what do you do when the weather is super hot out? You get ice cream of course. Now this place isn’t new, it is a fan favorite in Cincinnati, OH, Graeters. I am bringing it up because in July/August it had an all time season favorite, key lime pie ice cream.
Now, during the year, I will get my number one favorite ice cream, mint chocolate chip. That is my all time favorite throughout the whole year, however, during each month of the year, Graeters will have a specialty flavor. In July/August that flavor is key lime pie, my number one favorite seasonal flavor. One year, during COVID, they did not have key lime pie and I was extremely disappointed. But this year, it was here.

As soon as we found out they had it, my sister and I sped over to Graeter’s to get our key lime pie ice cream. I could not wait. We both ordered two scoops of the key lime pie ice cream in bowls. Our bowls were filled to the brim, it looked like three scoops instead of two, but we weren’t complaining. The ice cream had a slight lime green color to it and you could see chunks of graham cracker crust mixed into the ice cream. I waited about five mins to eat mine. Weird, I know, but I like my ice cream to melt a little bit because I find I can taste the flavors better and it is easier to eat when it isn’t too firm.

The first spoonful was amazing! The ice cream was smooth and slightly tart. My second spoonful had a little bit of the graham cracker crust, a little hard, with a slight crunch. It was the perfect texture to break up the smoothness of the ice cream. I took my time eating it because I wanted to savor each scoop. Alaina and I were nice and full after we ate our ice cream, but before we left I stopped by the freezers where Graeter’s keeps their pints of ice cream for customers to buy. Lo and behold they had a stack of key lime pie pints calling my name. Seasonal flavors can run out quickly, so there is no guarantee how long they will have it, so I promptly decided to pick up two pints of key lime pie to save for a rainy day.
So if you are new to the Cincinnati area or you are a local and didn’t know Graeters had seasonal flavors, check out their website and if you see a flavor you are interested in, be sure to stop by.
